Clear Carbon Consulting partners with World Resources Institute (WRI) to help the United Nations move towards climate neutrality.

On July 9 2007, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, announced the UN’s interest in moving toward Climate Neutrality. As a first step in this effort, Clear Carbon Consulting is working with WRI to complete an initial greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) footprint of the UN’s 44 organizational units. This GHG inventory estimate will help the UN identify opportunities for cost-effective emission reductions and understand the approximate amount of carbon reductions that need to be purchased to achieve climate neutrality.

The GHG inventory will account for electricity, fuel, and refrigerant use by the UN’s agencies, funds, and programs. Due to the heavy travel requirements of UN staff, the organization’s emissions from business travel will be included in the inventory as well. The results of the inventory will be announced at the UN’s Environmental Management Group meeting in September and then a formal decision on the organization’s plans for climate neutrality will be made at the Chief Executives Board meeting in October.
